Having written down processes greatly reduces time spent on on-boarding, reduces ambiguity, and prevents mistakes. But bureaucracy also has its advantages. Having written-down processes greatly reduces time spent on onboarding, reduces ambiguity, and prevents mistakes. A counterintuitive effect is that it also makes it easier to change processes. It is really hard to change a process that doesn't have a name or location and lives in different versions in the heads of various people. Changing a written process and distributing the diff is much easier.
